Give me a break! Aargh!!! If I see one more resume that begins with, "Seeking a challenging opportunity to..." and is studded with "Responsible for this" and "Responsible for that", I think I may flip out.
These kind of phrases have always been trite and meaningless, but are particularly ineffective when resume software is now used to scrutinize candidate databases for resumes with specific keywords.
Let me shed some light on keywords...Keywords focused on industries, occupations, levels, degrees, schools, certifications, licenses, and geographic areas are often the critical difference in being picked up in a keyword search string by an employer.
Complete your resume with specific, quantifiable accomplishments and resume formatting that a computer database can easily navigate, and your resume will be a stand-out for both human eyes AND computer eyes.
Need to hear it from the horse's (er - recruiter's) mouth? Check out Carolyne Connor's blog post for AlwaysOn.com entitled "How to Structure a Resume to Increase Hit Rate on Executive Recruiter's Databases". As a seasoned national executive recruiter, Carolyne reminds us that " 'human eyes' rarely touch the paper". If you are going to sit in an employer's database anyway, for current and future openings, why not maximize your chances of your resume seeing daylight?
