After interviewing Libby Sartain, HR head for Yahoo!, Guy Kawasaki went out on a limb. He crafted a cover letter and resume and submitted them in response to an opening at Yahoo! for a Brand Manager 2 position. Guy's cover letter and resume submittal to Libby appears online in his blog.
What's cool is that he takes you through a play-by-play look into his thinking:
- why he chose to say what he did,
- posting the original job opening,
- posting his one-page resume and,
- also posting a 3-page version of his resume (more like a CV) that he is lambasting.
The next day he crawls out on the limb even further by displaying, in his blog for all the world to see, a critique of his cover letter and resume by the university relations manager of Yahoo! These two blog posts are a MUST READ for anyone interested in ramping up their resume and cover letter writing. The university relations manager's final words to Guy were, "Overall, you could do quite a bit to improve your resume. Everything from the basics of resume writing to the finer points of telling me why you matter over the thousands of resumes I read".
Take a page from Guy's actions - put your resume out there and get some resume critique advice from a professional, whether an experienced professional resume writer, HR manager, recruiter, or hiring manager. Then DO something about it!
